Nazneen’s life is turned upside down at the tender age of seventeen. Forced into an arranged marriage to an older man, she exchanges her Bangladeshi village home for a block of flats in London. In this new world, missing her home village and family, she will be the dutiful wife she was taught to be from birth, until she meets Karim (adapted from Sony Pictures Classics).

    1. Brick Lane is a certain area in London. Use Wikipedia to find out more about it.
    2. An ‘arranged marriage’ is when somebody else (parents or other relatives) choose your husband or wife. So, imagine your mother would look for a partner for you. You don’t even know him, and you must marry him. How would you feel about it? And what do you think, was Nazneen happy about her arranged marriage?
    3. Now watch the trailer one more time. You can see Nazneen falling in love with the young man. She seems to be happy, but at the same time also sad. Her heart tells her to follow her feelings, but her head tells her to follow the tradition of her people (to be loyal to her husband). Now is your turn: What is she going to do?
